{a promise} hot air balloon ride

13 years ago, we were looking up at the sky, watching the hot air balloon float off into the sunset. 13 years ago, my daddy promised.

"When you turn 18, I'll take you up in a hot air balloon."

we have it on video camera. and from that day forward, I never forgot.

as he always does, he kept his promise. and on saturday, I had the experience of my life. my favorite part? my best-friend-since-we-were-five Rosalind, went with me.

and the best part about that is that she's afraid of heights ;)

buuuut because I'm her bestie, I can do things no one else can. I didn't tell her she was coming with me, until I arrived at her house that evening to pick her up. we went straight to the launch place, and she had no choice but to follow.

and follow she did. she loved it.

Bella Balloons was amazing, and our pilot Rob was spectacular. I'm not sure why all good things have to come to an end, but apparently they do. and when we touched back down on the ground after an unforgettable sixty minutes, I had tears in my eyes.

aaand for what it's worth, I think this would be an amazing exit from a wedding. everyone always drives off into the sunset, why not float off into the sunset?

tori is the girl you look at twice, because she might be wearing socks with her high-heels, or a funky hat on her head. she doesn't care what you think about her, because she knows where her confidence is found. tori is exceptionally gifted in art, and is currently attending an art school to be able to further her talents beyond measure.

So I need to write more. I don't only want this blog to be something I use to brag on. Show off my work on. I want this blog to be something you read to get to know me. The real me. I don't like masks, because they damage...and leave lasting scars.

I need to remind myself that my posts don't have to be long. Sometimes, they can only be a paragraph or two. Or even just a sentence or two. Being a perfectionist, I like to write long, eloquent things that people "ooh" and "ahh" over. But the truth is, I don't have time to write long, eloquent things for you to "ooh" and "ahh" over. That's not me right now. That's not my life.

So here and there, I'll post. My goal is two or three times a week. I'm going to get back into (or rather start...seeing as I only did it once) the 'i love thursdays' posts, and maybe try and find a few more traditions to start to keep me accountable.

For now, it's late. But you also know that a photographer should never dare to post something without a picture in it...so here you go :) I'm saving the rest for thursday!

So I'm starting a new tradition. It's called 'i love Thursday'. Why Thursday? Because I had this idea to do these posts, and I didn't want to waste time starting the tradition, and today happened to be a Thursday. So there you have it. Every Thursday, I will post select images of things that I love. Things that make me, me. Sometimes, it might only be one picture, sometimes it will be many. Today happens to be the latter because it's the first time I'm posting this tradition. So I have much to confess.

I'm also going to be starting some other traditions...but they're a secret :) I'll be announcing them soon, along with my prices for 2011.

For now...

i love.
The sun. It makes me happy. Warms my heart. Brings a whole new dimension to my day. It is truly true that, "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands..." {Ps. 19:1}

i love.
Homegrown apples. Imperfect visually, yet consist of unmatched delicate flavor and texture. They have a tendency to remind one of sweltering summer afternoons, matted windblown hair, and impromptu picnics in your backyard.

Time? Yes. Love. Can't get enough of it.

And the most gorgeous best friend in the whole world, for that matter. I can't possibly pick favorites. every one was a favorite. And then I had to decide whether I wanted it in color or black and white. I'm becoming more obsessed with b&w photos as the days move by...but more on that later.

Hello to an unforgettable evening. Dressing like gypsies and innocently wearing long skirts, we trudged into the grasses to capture the last of the sunlight. Didn't take long to realize that seeds and burrs were (very proudly) our new attachments. Pun intended. Photographers will do practically anything for a shoot, and we happily spent 30 minutes afterward picking each individual seed and burr off our skirts :) Actually, we became pros at it by the time we were finished. If anybody else wants to attempt a photoshoot in a field, might just want to consider hiring one of us for cleanup. You'll need it.

*sigh* Porch swings, talks, patience, walking, laughing, teasing, more waiting, more teasing and more laughing are what our evening consisted of. And memories :) Eastlyn and Lydia are two lovely photographers, and I'm so honored to know them! Here is just a sneak peek of the gorgeousness to come!

My Rosalind. Breathtakingly gorgeous, unbearably cute. We've known each other since we were about 5, and I couldn't imagine life without her. I'm proud to say she's my best friend! We went to downtown Xenia in some random alleys, and then ate ice-cream, (yay for $0.50 cones at McD's :D) and then stopped in a field on the way home to seize the last of the golden rays gracing the weeds :) Mmmmm....yummy :) (the light and the ice-cream!)

So I'm renting a tilt-shift lens for 10 days, and I'm going on a shooting marathon because of it. I have a shoot every. single. day so I can get my money's worth out of it :) (my momma taught me well!) This lens is amazing. There's something so dreamy and storybookish about the images it produces...it adds such an artisan element to everything. I'm so in love with it, I might just keep it in my bed with me. I mean, so that I know it won't disappear. I mean, I know it won't run away or anything like that; it can't run away. But even so, sleeping with it (no...not that) enables me to just make SURE it doesn't somehow pick up and leave me. Anyways.

I'm going to be doing a bunch of teasers within the next 10 days, and then I'll post the full shoots of the previous families I've captured, and THEN the full shoots of all these that I'm anticipating over the next week and a half. I'm waay behind. I'm always way behind. So then that doesn't really make me behind then, right? If I'm always behind, then the "behind" becomes my expected time...am I right? ANYWAYS.

Connor is such a cool guy...and I was honored to be able to take his senior pictures! I always wonder what my seniors think when I suggest walking around a city for their shoot. "Wha?! We'll get killed!" And then when we're actually doing it. "She wants me to stand next to some trash cans?!" Yeah :) I've got some real troopers out there, and Connor was definitely one of them. I just started and finished up writing an essay for a scholarship contest. The topic was "Revolutionizing a Higher Education". I procrastinated/forgot for an entire month, and ended up writing this over the past two days...the deadline was tonight at midnight. Talk about pressure, eh?

Besides the scholarship winner, there will also be camcorder winner. If you have submitted a video essay (which I have), then you are entered to win. The winner is determined by the person with the most views on their video.

This is one amazing family. The parents didn't want to get in the pictures, but here are their children.

As many of you know, I was a participant (and 3rd place winner!) of the Bible Bee this year. This is the family that led our local group: The Southern Ohio Bible Bee. SO MUCH sacrifice went in to the organization...all I can say is wow. One of the most amazing, God-fearing families I know!

My first official senior shoot...I'm so happy with how they turned out! We met for the shoot, and I asked him what kind of pictures he was looking for, and he responded with "cool pictures". Tell me if these are not cool or what!

Oh, and by the way, I don't know how I lived without Adobe Lightroom.

He plays in the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as a cellist.

Climbing trees must be his specialty...he zipped up this one faster than you could say "photography".

In case you were wondering, these were taken at Wegerzyn Gardens in Dayton :) It has become my new favorite place!

This little boy was the most cutest little boy I think I've ever seen. He was ADORABLE! I could have taken pictures of him literally ALL DAY. I came up with 92 edited pictures...yikes.

Here are some of my favorites:

He loved his football :)

His mom and I found the only color-changed tree in the whole park (beginning of Oct?!?!) and used it as a backdrop. It's stunning, isn't it?

Trenton brought his little cowboy boots along, and I couldn't resist.

So handsome!

Guess what I was trying to get him to do here? Look serious. HA. Like I really thought that would happen, right?

This is one of my favorites.

See? He could look serious if I didn't ask him to in the first place :P

I was so spoiled. Trenton posed himself on nearly every place I asked him to go stand! I loved it. He was free to be himself, which is a HUGE factor in portraits :)

He didn't actually play the guitar...we just used it as a prop :P

Again...couldn't resist!

I think that this shoot will remain to be one of the best shoots I will ever do. I couldn't have asked for a better model or day! Thank you Trenton, the L family, and most of all, Baruch HaShem!*
